Statement from the President of Local y019
Dear Queer Yukon Society Family,
Today we face one of the most challenging moments in our organization’s history. This is a time of uncertainty and pain, especially for those who have received layoff notices. I want to address each of you with empathy, gratitude, and an unwavering commitment to our community. First, I want to acknowledge the incredible work you have done. Every effort, every action, every hour you have dedicated to this cause has been a cornerstone in the fight for inclusion, equality, and respect. You have not just been workers—you have been the heart of this organization, creating safe spaces for so many in our territory.I know this news feels like a heavy blow. Please know that this is not a reflection of your abilities or commitment but rather the result of the financial challenges we are facing as an organization. As your union, our top priority is to ensure this transition is as fair and humane as possible. To those who are staying, this is also a call for unity. We must support one another and remember that the essence of our struggle lies in solidarity. Together, we will find ways to overcome this crisis and continue working toward the vision that binds us.Now more than ever, I ask you not to lose hope. We are a strong, resilient community filled with love. While this moment is difficult, I am confident we will find ways to heal and rebuild. Please reach out to me or our shop stewards for support, clarification or guidance if you need it.
From my heart to my Queer Yukon Society Family,
Austria Lopez
