A current and former Wildland Firefighter will join Yukon Employees Union (YEU) President Justin Lemphers and Yukon NDP Leader Kate White to talk about the concerns facing the territory’s Wildland Firefighters.
Wildland firefighters risk their lives to keep Yukoners and our territory safe, but the Yukon Government needs to do its part to keep them safe.
Yukon wildland firefighters represented by YEU do not have presumptive cancer coverage, while other jurisdictions in Canada have moved ahead to protect their own wildland firefighters.
Fighting wildfires brutally impacts human health. Many wildland firefighters do not even have union protection because of the terms of their employment.
Over 30 positions related to wildland fire management in the Yukon were staffed by casual workers in 2024. Casual wildland firefighters have no protection from being fired without just cause, they cannot file grievances, and their employer never has to listen to their calls for improved wages or benefits.
This needs to change.
YEU is urging membership to learn about the working conditions of Yukon wildland firefighters as we head into another wildfire season.
Please let your co-workers know about this event, and attend the event to show support for these heroes.
Wildland firefighters are hard at work preparing for the coming peak of the wildfire season. Many cannot attend because they are busy keeping Yukoners safe.
We have a Facebook Live stream for members who cannot attend.
