Employer Walks Away from Conciliation Board Hearings

April 30, 2023

UPDATE:

Late on April 29, the Employer representatives walked away from discussions and declined to continue with the attempt at mediating a settlement.

BACKGROUND:

The Conciliation Board Panel convened a meeting with the Union team and the management team on April 28 and April 29 in Whitehorse.

The purpose of the meeting was to hold exploratory talks to see whether there was a path to settlement prior to continuing with a more formal process that required formal written presentations.

WHAT HAPPENS NOW?

Each of the bargaining teams will provide written submissions for the consideration of the Conciliation Board

The Conciliation Board is comprised of a mutually agreed to chairperson (Jacquie de Aguayo), a Union representative (Gary Cwitco) and an Employer spokesperson (Catharine Read). The Board will meet to review the submissions and are expected to provide non-binding written recommendations to the Labour Relations Board Chairperson toward the end of May, or early June at the latest.

The Union has previously provided tentative dates for in-person membership meetings across the Yukon. Given the fact that the parties were unable to reach agreement this past weekend, these will be Strike Vote meetings, commencing May 29th.

The specific times and locations of these in-person, members-only meetings are being finalized and will be communicated to you as soon as they are confirmed.
