On September 4th, 2021 a new regulation to make all Yukon workplaces safer from violence and harassment comes into effect.
It took the brutal murder of a nurse at work in the emergency room of a hospital in Windsor, Ontario in 2005 to renew the drive to improve workplace safety laws in the provinces and territories. Unions, domestic violence advocates and other activists across the country mobilized and lobbied for changes to Occupational Health and Safety laws. Ontario was the first jurisdiction to pass changes to workplace safety laws (Bill 168) in 2010.
Improvements to the law are important but it will take vigilance in our workplaces to make sure employers do the risk assessments, establish clear policies and procedures and train all employees on what is harassment and violence and how to report it.
We have invited representatives from the Yukon Workers’ Compensation Health and Safety Board to present this educational session to help workplaces meet the requirements of the Violence and Harassment Prevention Regulation.
This session will provide information that can help your workplaces prepare for the recently approved Violence and Harassment Prevention Regulation. Participants learn about the Regulation, including what workplace violence and harassment means, as well as the workplace roles and responsibilities for preventing violence and harassment.
