YG/YEU New Contract FAQ’s
You’ve been asking…
1. When will I get a copy of the new Collective Agreement?
Now that the new YG/YEU contract has been approved by the membership, we move into the next stage; implementation. There is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes between the vote and the receipt of newly printed contracts in the hands of workers. Until you receive the new agreement you can review the Ratification Kit online; all changes to the CA are contained in this kit.
2. When will I see my retroactive pay increase?
YEU has been informed by the Public Service Commission that YG Employees can expect to see the retroactive pay increase on their September 18th pay. The increases in this contract are 2% in 2013, 2% in 2014 and 1.75% in 2015.
3. Why didn’t my proposal make it into the contract?
As with any negotiations, bargaining with an employer is a process of give and take. YEU works from a position of no-concession bargaining, meaning we are not willing to give up anything in the contract in order to make changes or gains. For that reason the Bargaining Team must carefully select proposals they believe will have the greatest impact on the largest number of employees. If you submitted a proposal that did not result in a change to the contract please, submit it again next round.
4. What about the pay raise? Don’t we usually get about 5% increase a year?
It’s easy to forget the numbers from years past so we have put together an historical overview of the pay raises, (linked here) negotiated since 1995. It’s worth noting that 1995-1997 not only showed NO increase, but in fact workers suffered a rollback of 2% and then a two year wage freeze at the lower rate. If you’d like to know more about that, please have a look at the Hansard discussion linked here.
5. What about online voting next time?
The technology to ensure secure online voting is fairly new. We share your interest in looking for voting options. As YEU is a component of a national organization, the PSAC, we are governed by its bylaws and regulations. Any member interested in proposing a change to the process can do so! Please contact your Local Executive (see our website to learn who that is) to find out how to participate and how to submit a resolution.
We encourage you to bring forward a resolution at the next YEU Convention (October 2014) through your Local or a Committee, which (if approved by delegates) will go to the PSAC National Convention. This is how change occurs in a large democratic organization…. it starts with the membership and works its way up through the process until it is voted on at a National Convention by member delegates from all regions and Components. If you want this, YOU must pursue it… such change cannot come from staff, it can only come from the membership!
6. How come I didn’t find out about meetings?
The Ratification Vote meeting schedule was advertised in Whitehorse newspapers, the Klondike Sun in Dawson, the scrolling ads in Dawson, the website, Facebook and by direct email. They were announced as PSA’s on local news outlets and were posted on most union bulletin boards We do our level best to let everyone know, but we will always miss some people. All we can suggest is that you provide us with your personal email address; we can put you on our electronic distribution list so you don’t miss any updates. You can also follow us on Facebook!
