A just recovery from the pandemic means that no one is left behind. What is Guaranteed Livable Basic Income? What does it mean for communities in the North?
Join us for a virtual event on why northern communities need Guaranteed Livable Basic Income. We’re looking forward to hearing from MP Leah Gazan and Craig Berggold. PSAC North REVP Lorraine Rousseau will moderate the discussion.
At the end of the event, participants will participants will have the chance to take part in a digital action in support of our demand for Guaranteed Livable Basic Income.
There will be French and Inuktitut simultaneous interpretation.
Leah Gazan, MP Winnipeg Centre, will talk to us about how we can implement a basic income. Besides helping everyday families cover the cost of rent, food, and other expenses, Gazan says a basic income would help to protect the people who are made most vulnerable in our society. In December 2021, MP Leah Gazan introduced a private member’s bill to develop a national framework for a permanent Guaranteed Livable Basic Income (GLBI) in Canada. For nearly two years, Gazan has been working alongside basic income supporters, anti-poverty organizers, disability rights champions, seniors’ advocates, unions, and Indigenous Peoples, to put a basic income at the front of the poverty elimination conversation.
Craig Berggold is a leading advocate and nationally recognized campaigner for basic income, in particular, organizing the arts community in it’s overwhelming support for basic income. He is the co-author of a public letter to the Prime Minister calling for a basic income for all and endorsed by artist unions representing 75,000 members. See The Case for Basic Income & the Arts campaign. Craig is an independent artist, filmmaker, and precarious teacher.
