Building Our Union Together: Five Priorities from October 1st Trusteeship Townhall

Thank you to every member who joined us for the Trusteeship Townhall on October 1st. Your questions, ideas, and honest feedback matter. The trusteeship has a clear purpose: to return YEU to a strong and more effective union, led by its members. Here are the five priorities we shared at the Town Hall, and where things stand on each.

1. Rebuild our Locals through member engagement and education

Strong Locals are the foundation of a strong union. We have set aside resources for education so that members and Local leaders have the knowledge and support they need to be active and effective. You will see more training opportunities in the months ahead. The Deputy Trustees are also working closely with Locals to rebuild capacity. If you are a Local Officer, expect calls from them over the coming weeks if you haven't already.

2. Strengthen member solidarity

We want every member to be proud to belong to the YEU. Solidarity grows when members feel heard, informed, and connected to one another. That means more communication, more chances to get involved, and a union that shows up for its members in the workplace and the community.

3. A thorough review of the YEU By-laws

Work on the component By-law review is already underway. Proposed changes will be brought forward at the Triennial Convention, and YEU members will vote on them democratically. Members will make the final decisions about how our union is governed.

4. Stronger internal policies and procedures

We are closely reviewing how the union works day to day, including the grievance process. The guiding question is simple: what can we do to make our union more effective for members? Our goal is a YEU that is effective and more visible. The union has the resources and tools to do this work, and it is happening right now.

5. A successful Triennial Convention and a new YEU Executive

The Triennial Convention is where hundreds of grassroots union activists from across the territory take the next big step. Delegates will consider budget changes and By-law changes and will elect a new YEU Executive. Once elected, the new Executive will receive relevant training so that it has the tools to succeed from day one. We want this Convention to build real excitement about the future of our union.

The convention will be a three-day event taking place on May 7th, 8th, and 9th.

Over the coming weeks, we will send callout letters to over 20 Local Presidents across the territory. To attend the Triennial Convention, you must be elected as a delegate by your Local. Please contact your Local President if you would like to become a delegate.

Together, we can exchange ideas, build connections, and shape our union's future.
