A Better Fit: Union of Canadian Transportation Employees (UCTE)
As an option to better meet your needs, rather than decertifying, the local may be serviced by the Union of Canadian Transportation Employees (UCTE). UCTE is another component of PSAC. It already represents many members in aviation and campaigns on airport and aviation issues.
UCTE is proud to represent more than 11,000 members from all walks of life including Nav Canada, federally regulated airports, the Transportation Safety Board, Canadian Space Agency, Canadian Transportation Agency, Transport Canada, the Canadian Coast Guard, and NRCan.
Most importantly, you need to know that the power to decide is in your hands. Please inform yourself so you can make the best decision in the collective interests of you, your family, and your co-workers.
Addressing Decertification
The Public Service Alliance of Canada PSAC respects the democratic rights of its members to make decisions that they feel are in their best interest. It is important that the risks of not having a union (even temporarily) are presented and carefully and pragmatically considered.
A decertification means your ongoing issues will not be resolved, and the employer is at liberty to resolve them however they see fit.
Despite promises from those leading the charge to decertify, you will be without a collective agreement, that is, you will not have a union to enforce it. At that time, the employer can make changes to the terms and conditions of employment.
You won’t be consulted. You won’t be able to meaningfully negotiate.
In a unionized workplace, classification, and salary structures are negotiated between the union and the employer. In a non-unionized workplace, management can unilaterally impose a new classification or salary structure. If a decertification is successful, you will be working in a non-unionized workplace.
Additionally, you could see immediate changes to things such as:
- Your schedule and scheduling practices
- Your seniority ranking
- Your overtime
- Your vacation payout
We want to make sure none of your past gains are lost due to decertification.
